The Democratic National Committee announced a new campaign Friday morning targeting youth voters and fans of Taylor Swift, the biggest pop star in the world right now, with the hopes of turning out more people for Kamala Harris as she fights against Donald Trump and his army of fascist dipshits. The campaign includes mobile billboards across Miami, where Swift is performing Friday through Sunday, and a new wrinkle for the DNC: A custom Snapchat filter.
The Taylor Swift-themed “I Will Vote” campaign includes a new Snapchat filter that allows users to tap through options to complete a sentence communicating what they’re “fearless for,” a reference to the singer’s 2008 album. Options include being fearless for democracy, reproductive rights, climate action, and LGBTQ+ rights, among others.
The filter will only be available in Florida (where the Swift concerts are this weekend), along with the seven core battleground states, Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina.
Swift endorsed Harris in an Instagram post last month shortly after Trump and Harris debated for the first and only time. But Swift has no official connection to the new Snapchat filter and the musician’s image or name doesn’t actually appear anywhere.
The Democrats also bought animated billboards in Miami with slogans like “We’re in our Kamala Era,” another reference to Swift’s music. The campaign is an effort to push people to IWillVote.com, where users can make sure they’re registered to vote and sign up if they’re not.
Young voters have been one of Harris’s most reliable demographics, especially young women, based on polls since she entered the race in July. According to a recent poll from the New York Times, 58% of people aged 18-29 plan to vote for Harris, with just 37% of that age group planning to vote for Trump.
But whereas Harris seemed to have real momentum across the country back in August, she’s struggled in battleground states over the past month. In late August, Harris was +3.4 over Trump in Michigan and +3.8 in Wisconsin, according to 538’s polling averages. Harris is now just +0.6 in Michigan and +0.3 in Wisconsin. And she needs to turn that around if any of us want to have a good night’s sleep between now and November 5.
“This election will determine the future for young voters, from student loan debt relief and economic opportunity to whether they have fewer rights than their grandmothers did,” Rosemary Boeglin, DNC Communications Director, said in a statement.
“Democrats are reaching out to young voters where they are, from concert venues to social media platforms, to make sure they have the resources they need to cast their ballot,” Boeglin continued. “We’re not taking any vote for granted, and we’ll continue to make sure young voters across the country know everything that’s at stake and the stark contrast between Vice President Harris’ New Way Forward and Donald Trump’s Project 2025 agenda.”
Will Harris hold a big-name concert with Taylor Swift soon? That was the buzz on Thursday after a rumor got started based on someone misreading a teaser email from the DNC. And while that isn’t happening, the Democrats are doing the best they can to make sure Trump isn’t allowed back in the White House while leaning on Swift’s endorsement.
“Our country’s youth are mobilized to speak now for the future they deserve,” said Boeglin, “and they’ll elect Vice President Harris, Governor Tim Walz, and Democrats down the ballot in November.
